London Papers

List of London Newspapers

London Papers are extremely well read, popular, and influential with people taking their concerns and views directly from what they read in the news each day.

The following newspapers are the most popular in London.

The London Paper

The paper was the first London newspaper to be published in direct competition with the Evening Standard since 1987 and Robert Maxwell's short-lived London Daily News. It was also the first newspaper to be launched by News International.

The London Lite

London Lite, edited by Ted Young, is designed to be especially attractive to younger female readers, and features a wide range of lifestyle articles but less news and business news than the main paper. Celebrity gossip is given far more coverage than international news and the Lite also reports in detail the incidents of violent crime in the capital.

Freedom of the Press

The recent european report on free press ranked the UK as number 36 with the following synopsis:

British media are free and largely independent from government interference.

The United Kingdom has a strong tradition of public broadcasting, and the British Broadcasting Corporation, although funded by the government, is editorially independent. Ownership of independent media outlets is concentrated in the hands of a few large companies, including that headed by Rupert Murdoch, and many of the private national papers remain aligned with political parties.

Few commercial radio news stations exist—in fact, 8 of the 11 radio news stations are affiliated with the BBC—but several independent news television channels operate throughout the country, including ITV and British Sky Broadcasting. Authorities may monitor internet messages and e-mail without judicial permission in the name of national security and "well-being." However, surveillance must be approved by the home secretary, and there are departments in place to handle public complaints of abuse as well as interception warrants.

An estimated 62 percent of the population was able to access the internet without restriction in 2006.
